È situata sulle coste del mwhaMar Nero, mwhq25 km a sud di mwhgGagra. È una rinomata meta turistica estiva per i turisti mwhwrussi.

Storia

La città è stata fondata da mwjacoloni mwjqgreci nel mwjgV secolo a.C. con il nome di mwjwPityus. Nel mwka407 fu meta dell'mwkqesilio di mwkgSan Giovanni Crisostomo che però morì prima di arrivarci. Dal mwkw541 è sede mwlaarcivescovile.

Il monumento principale della città è la mwlgcattedrale di sant'Andrea, risalente al mwlwX secolo e costruita dal re mwmaBagrat III di Georgia.

Nella seconda metà del mwmgXIII secolo, fu per breve tempo una mwmwcolonia genovese con il nome di Pezonda.

Nell'ottobre del mwnq1964 vi soggiornò mwngNikita Sergeevič Chruščëv, che qui ricevette la notizia della sua deposizione.cite-ref-1[1]
